Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) and
Veteran-Owned Small Business (VOSB) Certifications

SDVOSB and VOSB certifications are administered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) through the Veterans First Contracting Program, which prioritizes these businesses in winning federal contracts. This initiative not only honors veterans but also encourages their entrepreneurial ventures.

Benefits of SDVOSB/VOSB Certification

Exclusive Set-Asides: Access to federal set-aside and sole-source contracts specifically for veteran-owned businesses.
Priority in VA Procurements: The VA gives priority to SDVOSBs and VOSBs in its contracting and subcontracting opportunities.
Increased Visibility: Inclusion in a database accessed by federal agencies and contractors seeking veteran-owned businesses for procurement opportunities.

Why Pursue SDVOSB/VOSB Certification?

Empowering Veteran Entrepreneurs

SDVOSB/VOSB certification is designed to recognize and support the entrepreneurial spirit of U.S. veterans. By pursuing these certifications, veteran-owned businesses gain a competitive edge in the federal procurement marketplace, which can lead to increased business opportunities.

Exclusive Access to Government Contracts

The federal government aims to award a significant portion of annual contracting dollars to SDVOSBs and VOSBs. This includes set-aside contracts and sole-source contracts, which can be less competitive than open bids.

Enhanced Business Visibility

Being certified puts your business in the VA’s Vendor Information Pages (VIP) database, which is the first stop for federal agencies seeking to fulfill procurement requirements with veteran-owned businesses. This listing increases your visibility directly to the agencies actively looking to work with veterans.

Priority in VA Procurements

Certified SDVOSBs and VOSBs receive priority in VA procurements, placing them at the top of the list for many contracts issued by one of the largest government agencies in the United States, further enhancing their opportunities to secure government business.

Frequently Asked Question

SDVOSB (Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business) and VOSB (Veteran-Owned Small Business) certifications are available to businesses that meet the following criteria:

Ownership: The business must be at least 51% owned by one or more veterans, with service-disabled veterans qualifying for SDVOSB.

Control: Veterans must control management and daily business operations. For SDVOSB, the service-disabled veteran must hold the highest officer position in the company.

Veteran Status: Owners must be veterans who have served in the active military, naval, or air service and have been discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable.

Once granted, SDVOSB/VOSB certification does not expire as long as the business continues to meet the eligibility criteria. However, the business must undergo a re-verification process every three years for VOSB and every year for SDVOSB under the current VA regulations to ensure ongoing compliance with the program’s requirements. This re-verification process includes submitting updated documentation to confirm that the business still meets all the necessary criteria.

To apply for SDVOSB or VOSB certification, you will generally need to provide:
Proof of Veteran Status: DD Form 214, or other discharge documents showing that the veteran was honorably discharged.
Proof of Ownership and Control: Articles of incorporation, stock certificates, operating agreements for LLCs, and any other documentation proving ownership and control by veterans.
Personal Identification: Copy of driver’s licenses or other government-issued ID to verify identities of veteran owners.
Financial Documents: Business and personal tax returns, profit and loss statements, and balance sheets to demonstrate economic viability.
Company Documents: Business license, lease agreements, and contracts to substantiate the business’s operational status.
